What is your Love Language?

Work, work, work. We all have a job to do, don’t we? And while we maintain employment to pay the bills and save for retirement, have you ever considered why you’re working where you are? Maybe there is a deeper reason for why you do what you do.

I feel there’s something in each of us that dictates our direction in life, and most of the time, we have no idea that something is even there, working behind the scenes. It’s who we are, the inner compass guiding us, our love language.

Even if you’re not consciously aware of your own inner purpose, I bet if you stopped to reflect a moment, you’ll find some constants in the jobs and careers you’ve chosen, even if you hate the hours and stress that can come with them.

For me, it’s been working in retail/customer service, but it goes beyond my ability to sell a product to any of the customers I’ve assisted over the decades. I have a need to help people, to make them smile and laugh, to feel good about their retail experience, even if they don’t buy anything. Heck, this new writing career of mine also involves a great deal of customer service, possibly the most challenging of my life. I need to try to sell myself through the literary content I put out there for all of you. Talk about pressure 😉

One group of people I often think about are those working in the medical field. I don’t know about you, but doctors, nurses, paramedics, and everyone involved in healthcare cannot get paid enough, in my opinion. With everything they go through and do on a daily basis, one has to have that drive, that love language of wanting to help people in need, often during the worst moments of their lives. They possess intense compassion and a compulsion to heal.

My wife is a natural-born teacher. She didn’t officially become a professor until later in her adult life, but she’s always possessed an overwhelming curiosity and a need to pass along knowledge she has gained to others. And she’s so passionate about educating. I can’t tell you how many nights and weekends she spent reading essays and grading papers, going above and beyond to ensure her students were actually learning the subjects. I’ve always loved and respected that about her.

What about your own experience? Are you in the job or career that calls to you, even if you don’t realize it, or do you feel a subconscious pull toward something different? Take some time for inner reflection. If you’re not where you feel you need to be, then make a course correction if you’re able. It may take some time/further education/planning, but you are so worth it. And you may just make this world a better place to live in while you’re at it!

Thanks for tuning in, my friends. I’ll keep writing if you’ll keep reading😊

Hey, and whatever you are, love what you do and be a good one!

-Dave
