There’s No Wrong Way

'Twas the day before Christmas, and most preparations were done.

Little did I know, the real work had not yet begun;

My wife’s presents were wrapped with the minor skill I possessed,

At least I took pride in cleaning up all the mess;

Damn, this poetic plagiarism is tougher than I thought it would be. Oh well, not all our plans can succeed, right? How about we go for more originality, even if the lines don’t sing like those from that famous “A Visit from St. Nicholas” poem.

Seasonal Musings

What does December mean to you?

Is it holly, jolly, or perhaps blue?

The older I get, the more I understand,

This month isn’t the same for all in the land.

For some, the decorations and lights went up quick,

Starting in November, some said it was sick.

It’s just past Halloween, those folks would complain,

Can’t we enjoy Thanksgiving before we board the yuletide train?

In this busy world, I can see how some may not be impressed,

Yet that feeling of Christmas can chase away the everyday stress.

It’s okay if early celebrating isn’t your thing,

But here’s a thought I feel is worth remembering.

There’s no wrong way to Christmas, you must realize,

Whether you have that twinkle of magic within your eyes,

Or if it’s all the trees, packages, and commercialism you despise.

Maybe you’ve experienced heartbreak and loss and want to forget,

Holidays are known to heighten feelings of remorse and regret,

So it’s okay if you’re not into celebrating, perhaps not quite yet.

All I ask from you all on this Christmas Eve day,

Is that we all get to experience things in our own unique way.

For some, the religious meaning must be the key,

Christ is the reason for the season, is what you should see.

Others like Santa, elves, and silver bells ringing,

It’s a time of warm memories, eggnog, and singing.

Still more prefer some quiet and time to contemplate,

To unplug from an uncertain world of sorrow and hate,

Or to bring relief to the needy, with food and toys they’ll donate.

Whichever works for you, whatever the reason,

I hope you take what you need from this joyous season.

There is no wrong way to Christmas, is what I want you to see,

So here are some glad tidings to all of you, straight from me.

Many thanks to you for reading, it really means a ton,

Now, whatever you are, get out there and be a good one!

-Dave
