The days that don’t suck

  • Waking up next to your significant other after a good nights’ sleep

  • Ordering your daily coffee at the drive through and having it taste amazing

  • Hitting every green light on the way to work

  • Your co-workers all doing their jobs, making yours easier

  • Getting home and finding your favorite meal ready on the stove

  • Binging that cool new show while eating homemade chocolate chip cookies

  • Kissing your significant other goodnight as you slide into your comfy bed

All of the above could describe a perfect day, the kind that truly makes life worth living, but that’s not what today’s blog post is all about. After all, do we need the perfect day to help us survive this current existence? Those days are amazing when they happen, but having a bunch of days that don’t suck seems more realistic to me, so let’s dive a bit deeper.

Think about it. Yes, life is challenging at times, to put it mildly. With the uncertainty this Great Mystery brings to us, it’s easy to get stuck in a rut, or feel anxious and depressed, even angry. That’s why we need to grab onto every scrap of goodness we can get our hands on, regardless of how small, to make each day more bearable. It’s important to recognize the days that don’t suck and truly appreciate them.

It’s like what I describe in Carry On, my little guidebook for how to find hope and purpose in this struggle we call life. Find a Reason to Live Every Day. Sure, sipping the perfect coffee at the drive through after you’ve received a few not-so-good brews from the same place is awesome. And while it’s rare for all of your co-workers to do their job as expected, if they perform adequately, that’s pretty cool too. Heck, even oatmeal cookies can be adequate if you run out of chocolate chips, right? The trick is to keep yourself open to discovering the things that make your day not suck.

A great way I’ve found to help with this is to actively look for opportunities to make another person’s day not suck. Whether it’s holding the door open for someone, sending a quick text or meme to let a loved one know you’re thinking about them, or passing along a compliment, it all makes a huge difference. Who knows what sort of chain reaction of love and caring you’ll set off by these simple actions. It costs very little to be a good human being. In fact, it can pay you back in feel good dividends you weren’t even expecting! Seems worth the extra effort to me.

Okay, now that I’ve given you your pep talk for the day, get on out there and bake me some chocolate chip cookies with walnuts make this a day that doesn’t suck!

In other words, whatever you are, be a good one 😊
